Isaiah 1:17 (Our Orphans and Widows)

Welcome God today with this LIFE Group Devotion (website, Facebook).

"Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow." Isaiah 1:17 (full readings)

Rob's Reflections: Many in the Pro-Life community pray Archbishop Fulton Sheen's Spiritual Adoption prayer: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted and is in danger of abortion." Spoken 27 centuries ago, the words of Isaiah, "hear the orphan's plea", foreshadow the words of this prayer. Children in danger of abortion comprise most of the current era's orphans. As millions of these children die at the hands of the abortionist, their parents have eternal life threatening wounds that need reconciliation treatment (Project Rachel). The medical, legal and governmental communities have mostly died to these children. As our aborted children cease to physically exist, so too do we cease to exist to them. They are orphans. Just as they are orphans, their mothers are widows. As many of the fathers of these children have chosen to be emotionally and spiritually dead to their unborn offspring, so too have they chosen to be dead to the mothers of their unborn children. The fruits of abortion are orphans and widows. The prophet Isaiah appeared during a time of great distress for Israel. To "redress the wrong" of abortion we must also become prophets in our time of great distress. We must not let these children pass from us as orphans; we must not let the victimized mothers become and remain spiritual widows.

Faith Challenge: Pray the Spiritual Adoption prayer now. Adopt a child, an orphan of abortion, as your own child now. Unite your spirit with that unborn orphan so that child will never be alone...and in doing so know that you too will never be alone.

Feast Day: St. Nicholas Owen. An English architect and builder in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. During this time, the Penal Laws sought to make it a treasonable offense to practice the Catholic Faith. St. Nicholas designed and constructed hiding places for priests. In 1606 he was captured, imprisoned, tortured and killed. In 1970 he was canonized as part of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.

Faith Quote: "Slavery does away with fathers as it does with families. Slavery has no use for either fathers or families and its laws do not recognize their existence in the social arrangements of the plantation." ~ Frederick Douglass
