"O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart." Psalm 15:1-2 (full readings)
Chad's Reflections: At the opening of Psalm 15, David asks two synonymous questions. "Who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? In short, what does the Bible require of men? David spends the rest of the Psalm answering this question. Integrity means living in such a way that our statements about what is right and true are not embarrassed by the record of our life. It means that in our unguarded moments, we're the same as when the crowds are watching. It means that when others know what we believe, they can predict our actions; and knowing our actions, they have an accurate readout on our beliefs. Do people know that you are a follower of Jesus because you act like one or because you have some external marker like a fish sticker on your car? There was a Jewish Rabbi named Shlomo Carlebach who picked up the name 'Master Jesus'. Now how would a Jewish Rabbi, one of the most prominent of his time, get the name 'Master Jesus'? In the States, he was known as The Singing Rabbi. In Israel, the dancing Rabbi and in South Africa he was known simply as 'Master Jesus'. The South Africans simply loved this Rabbi and when he would visit, they would put him up in fancy 5 star hotels. When he would walk into such a hotel, he would immediately go to work; he would hug and kiss the black door man. Then he would hug and kiss the black bell boy. Then he would hug and kiss the stunned elevator man. So, during apartheid South Africa, some looked at him very sternly, "who is this white guy going around hugging and kissing black people? Doesn't he know his place?" Others looked on with giggles, and others looked on in amazement. One of the black bell boys looked at another and said, "who is this white guy with the skull cap and the big beard, doesn't he know his place?" To which the reply came, 'it must be...it can only be...Master Jesus' and the name stuck.
