Daniel 3:64-67 (The gateway to prayer)

Let's welcome God today by reflecting on this short Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which is based on Living Faith. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

Every shower and dew, bless the Lord...All you winds, bless the Lord...Fire and heat, bless the Lord...Cold and chill, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever. Daniel 3:64-67 (full readings)

Living Faith snippets: "These verses are part of a larger hymn summoning all creation to worship its creator. What an image! I often marvel at the might and mystery of nature. And yet all of nature, in its power, could kneel in awe before God who made it. How much more vastly mighty and mysterious is God!" by Karla Manternach

Steve's Thoughts: So often I find it difficult to pray. I am often distracted by frivolous minutiae or overwhelmed by the amount of "intentions" that are on my heart. I have a hard time just quieting my mind. This litany has often helped me focus my heart and mind on God and drown out those distractions. I have found that when I turn to God first in praise and thanksgiving the distractions melt away. I have often found that the real intentions of my heart rise to the surface. Have a blessed Thanksgiving! Lord, let me offer you the first fruits of my day in praise and thanksgiving. Amen.

Sr. Francelle's Devotion: Gratitude

Faith Challenges: Let's all invite one person each week (John 14:6) to join our LIFE Group (~250 of God's children)...welcome to Mickey Carlson!
* NEW: Seek God in prayer today, but instead of asking for something off the bat come before Him first with praise and thanksgiving.

Our Prayers: Those who pray together stay together. Fasting ideas in footnote below.

Psalm 50:14 (Praise God as Sacrifice)

Let's welcome God today by reflecting on this short Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which is based on Living Faith. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

Offer to God praise as your sacrifice... Psalm 50:14 (full readings)

Living Faith snippets: "How could praise be the equivalent of a concrete sacrifice? Compared to the first of your flock or harvest, your money or your time, it doesn't seem as if saying words of praise to God could require anything of me. Ah, but maybe it does. Perhaps putting aside my own desires, plans and conception of what life should be like does, indeed, require a sacrifice. A far greater sacrifice than anything concrete or material, in fact." by Amy Welborn

Rich's comments: Today's Living Faith author brought up an interesting question about how praising God could be a sacrifice, but I had a different answer. Upon reflection, I thought about my own struggles with pride and humility, and how I find it challenging and frequently forget to give God credit for what I often view as my own accomplishments. It is humbling to work really hard at something (blood, sweat, and tears) and then not feel the urge to toot your own horn and tell people "Hey, look what I did!" With this perspective in hand, I can really see how giving God praise is a sacrifice as well as a gift to God. Lord, teach me to be humble and to give You praise always, for You showed us the ultimate sign of humility by being born as a helpless child among us. Amen.

Faith Challenges: Let's all invite one person each week (John 14:6) to join our LIFE Group (~250 of God's children).
* NEW: Reflect on everything that God has given you and give Him praise.

Luke 11:1 (Praise God!)

Let's welcome God this morning by reflecting on this short Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which is based on Living Faith. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples. Luke 11:1 (full readings)

Living Faith snippets: "Jesus' answer to his apostles' request never fails to interest and challenge me. For he offers more than a prayer whose words are to be repeated. He offers a pattern--a model that involves praising and acknowledging God before we say another word." by Amy Welborn

Rich's comments: Prayer use to be challenging for me. I never knew how to begin. Now I know that I should follow Jesus' example by praising and acknowledging God first. In doing so I realize that everything is a gift from God and that I should be grateful for everything that is given to me. We read this morning in the Old Testament reading (Jonah 4:1-11) that Jonah learned this lesson as well. Lord, may I place You before all of my desires, my aggravations, my questions, and my pain. All glory goes to You. Amen.

Faith Challenges: Let's all invite one person each week (John 14:6) to join our LIFE Group (>240 of God's children).
* NEW: Pray to God by praising and acknowledging Him first.

John 11:27 (running hand in hand...)

Let's welcome God every morning by reflecting on this short Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which is based on Living Faith. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world. John 11:27 (full readings)

Living Faith snippets: "For all of us who have wrongly expected God to fulfill our every expectation, Martha is a source of great encouragement. The question is: can we let Jesus instruct us, even if he is a little blunt at times, and take His words to heart? If so, there is hope for us, for Jesus now and always has the words of eternal life." by Mark Neilsen

Pat nuggets: I run with my daughter Paige (9) after work, as she is training for her first 5K (27 Sep). Near the end of each run, when she is tired, Paige reaches out to hold my hand because this makes her "feel better." When I run hard, I reach out in prayer to our heavenly Father because it makes me feel better (peace and joy)...knowing that God is with us every step.

Faith Challenge: Let's invite others to join us (Mark 16:15)...Rich/Pat will gladly add them to the LIFE Group distro (202 email addresses).

Psalm 113:3 (praise God)

* Welcome God every morning before work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com). All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

From the rising to the setting of the sun is the name of the Lord to be praised. Psalm 113:3

Living Faith snippets: "From the rising of the sun to its setting--anywhere on earth--God is wide awake, mindfully caring for us. An additional consolation for me is that when I go to bed early or sleep late, you are there and, with so many others around the world, praising God in those perpetual risings and settings." by Fr. James Krings

Rich's comments: Praise God no matter what circumstances we may be facing in our lives. This may seem easier during good times than bad. This may be due in part to our confusion about the meaning of thanksgiving and praise. Thanksgiving describes our attitude toward what God has done, while praise is offered for who God is. By focusing on God and not on ourselves, we reinforce the power and presence of God in our lives.

Matthew 11:20 (conversion)

* Welcome God every morning before work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com).

Then [Jesus] began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. Matthew 11:20

Living Faith snippets: "If we're honest with ourselves, we can come up with "mighty deeds" that Christ has done in our lives -- most of which we probably tend to take for granted. It says that Jesus expects repentance/conversion as the response to his "mighty deeds." When was the last time I made a real change in my life motivated by loving intimacy with Christ?" by Mitch Finley

Rich's comments: It is easy to take things for granted if you do not reflect on them often. My wife and I have a good habit of thanking each other for the things that we do around the house as soon as we recognize them, even if they are things that we might expect from each other. It is always nice to hear that you are appreciated, and this keeps us from taking each other for granted. You may have heard of the acronym ACTS for the parts of prayer: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. If you make a habit of implementing these components to your prayer life, it will help keep you from taking God for granted and will help you build an intimate relationship with Christ. (Read more about the parts of prayer at http://www.expository.org/prayrtyp.htm.)

Feast Day (St. Bonaventure): "St. Bonaventure, known as "the seraphic doctor," was born at Bagnorea in Tuscany, in 1221. He received the name of Bonaventure in consequence of an exclamation of St. Francis of Assisi, when, in response to the pleading of the child's mother, the saint prayed for John's recovery from a dangerous illness, and, foreseeing the future greatness of the little John, cried out "O Buona ventura"-O good fortune!" from www.catholic.org/saints/.

Our Prayers: Abortion, our enemies/our troops, China earthquake, Myanmar cyclone, Midwest floods, depression/despair, prisoners, Vicki M. (her cancer treatment), Joe C. (11 yr old Devantae paralyzed), Kay C. (cancer treatment for Ms. Nancy Wheeler), Kathy-jo P. (friend Maria has terminal brain cancer and needs a hospice).

Psalm 145:2-3 (praising God, freedom)

* Welcome God every morning before work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com).

Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord and highly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. Psalm 145:2-3

Living Faith snippets: "If God is all that is perfect and good, then there is no doubt that God deserves all the praise we can muster. When we do praise God...we are the ones who need to be reminded how great God is. Our praise and prayer can put us in touch all over again with how mysterious, infinite and beyond our knowing God really is. I praise you, great God almighty! You alone are God!" by Karla Manternach

Pat nuggets:
* Freedom: I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating God's gift of freedom over the 4th of July weekend. I enjoy singing patriotic hymns in church, especially America the Beautiful which was written on top of Pikes Peak (by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893) : "O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life!" We praise God for our freedom...and pray for our enemies and our soldier heroes (past and present).
* ProLife: A group of 14 LIFE Devotions group members are running the Chicago Marathon (in Oct) for ProLife ministry (raising $/mile): Shane, John, Tracy, Steve, Chad, Bill, Rich, Courtney, Angi, Pat, Scott, Ben, Doug, Kevin. Our team is called LIFER's (Living In Faith Exchange Runners), and our team mission is "God first, ProLife, encouragement, fitness!" Yesterday, seven of us ran a local Colo. Springs race and offered it up (all suffering and glory) for ProLife ministry (group prayer before and after)...several of us wore ProLife wristbands for the race. Please let us know if are willing to sponsor us $/mile for the Chicago Marathon. The money goes to the individual runner's ProLife ministry of choice...Angi and I are giving our raised funds to a new crisis pregnancy center positioned across the street from the local abortion mill (Planned Parenthood). Thurs, 6 Mar (John 5:44)

* Welcome God every morning by reading the Living Faith devotional before work (~1 min). Order at http://www.livingfaith.com/.

How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God? John 5:44

Living Faith snippets: "We humans love to receive praise from others. Some people heap praise where praise is not due in order to "win friends," even false friends, and "influence people" for their own purposes. Many saints encourage us in their writings to let human praise roll off us like water off a duck's back. Jesus advises us to not place too much value on human praise, but instead "seek the praise that comes from the only God. We do know what God approves of: the love of God and the love of neighbor, in all times and all circumstances. Lord Jesus, help [us] to maintain [our] focus on the basics of the gospel message." by Mitch Finley

Pat's nuggets:
* Happy birthday to John Shannon!

* I heard a great song on the way to work this morning: "My Deliverer" by Rich Mullins. During one part of the song, children sing, "my deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by." I couldn't help but imagine all the aborted children singing this in heaven, which made me quite emotional. Here are some snippets from a message Stephanie Kemp forwarded from "Erica" yesterday: "Some of you may remember about a young girl who had a dream about a series of old books that would help end abortion. One of those books was “Horton Hears A Who.” Two main points of that story were “a person’s a person no matter how small” but there was another important point. At the end when it looks like the Whos will be wiped out because no one can hear them, they find one last Who named JO JO who wasn’t doing his part. When he yells YOP! ,suddenly there are enough voices and the Whos are heard and saved. At the hortonmovie.com website [movie opens 14 Mar] there is a whole page dedicated to ADOPT A WHO which includes T-shirts, bumper stickers etc. Our local church is taking some children down to pray at Planned Parenthood. They’ll have the t-shirts and LIFE tape and then we’ll go together to see the movie. Training up the next generation. For those of you not familiar with the LIFE tape movement check out bound-4-life."
