Acts 7:59 (Christmas Spirit)

Welcome God now with this LIFE Group Devotion(FB), provided by LIFE Runners(FB).Guest Authors schedule. LIFE Minute radio.

"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." ~ Acts 7:59 (full readings)

Rich's Reflections: "On the second day of Christmas, my true Love (Jesus) gave to me" ... a deeper share in His love. Jesus gave us His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, so that we may love as He loved. "The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us" (Romans 5:5). Coincidentally as the song goes, the second gift was two turtle doves, and doves are symbolic of the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22). This Christmas, open your heart to Jesus and receive His gift of the Holy Spirit. Lord, send the Holy Spirit to teach me to love as Jesus did on the cross. Amen.

Faith Challenge: Set aside all of the gifts that you have received this Christmas and focus on the gift from Jesus, the Holy Spirit.

Counter-Culture News: LSN, LifeNews, Priests for Life, AFA,Vatican, Project Rachel. Our Prayers: Prayer to end abortion, Spiritual Adoption,Alpha Center, Peters family (JP). Add Prayers on our website. Pray with meals, bedtime, wake up, LIFE Runners, etc. Consider mid-week Family Rosary (17 min). Let’s pray now.

Feast Day: Saint Stephen is a Christmas saint because of his love. Let us love as Stephen loved, even to martyrdom (Acts 7:59).

Faith Quote: "Wise leaders should have known that the human heart cannot exist in a vacuum. If Christians are forbidden to enjoy the wine of the Spirit they will turn to the wine of the flesh....Christ died for our hearts and the Holy Spirit wants to come and satisfy them." - A.W. Tozer

Through Christ our Lord,
Rich
James 1:22

Isaiah 56:1 (The Checklist of our hearts)

Welcome God now with this LIFE Group Devotion (FB), provided by LIFE Runners (FB). Guest Authors schedule. LIFE Minute radio.

"Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed." ~ Isaiah 56:1 (full readings)

Rosemary's Reflections: As I wrap up my first semester of grad school, I've been counting down the days until I get to come home for the holidays and spend quality time with loved ones. Before I can do that, there's a to-do list I must go through: make flight plans, pack my suitcases, clean my fridge, the list goes on and on. Though tedious, I know these tasks must be done in order for me to truly enjoy my time with family and friends. This is similar to what the season of Advent does for us--we must prepare our hearts for the birth of our Savior. We must clean out the inn of our hearts to make room for Him. One way to do that is through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which helps clean us of the stains sin leaves. If we also "observe what is right" and "do what is just," we can be ready to accept God's salvation for us in the form of a small child born in a stable.

Faith Challenge: As we rush around to decorate our homes, bake cookies, and finish (or start) Christmas shopping, set aside some time to pray and reflect on the real reason of Christmas. There's a reason why Christ is in the word Christmas.

Sr. Francelle's Devotion: Christmas

Counter-Culture News: LSN, LifeNews, Priests for Life, Vatican, Project Rachel.

Our Prayers: Prayer to end abortion. LIFE Runners Creed. Add Prayers. Pray with meals, bedtime, wake up, etc. Consider mid-week Family Rosary (17 min). Let’s pray now.

Feast Day:
Blessed Honoratus Kozminski

Faith Quote: "It is very helpful to confess with a certain regularity. It is true our sins are always the same; but we clean our homes, our rooms, at least once a week even if the dirt is always the same, in order to live in cleanliness, in order to start again. Otherwise, the dirt might not be seen, but it builds up." ~ Pope Benedict XVI

Through Christ Our Lord,
Rosemary

Luke 1: 78 - 79 (DAWN)

Welcome God now with this LIFE Group Devotion (website, Facebook).

"In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace." Luke 1: 78 - 79 (full readings)

Steve's Reflections: It is CHRISTmas eve and the "dawn from on high", Jesus, is upon us. Zachariah paints a powerful image of our savior, Jesus, and how his birth is born out of a father's compassion and mercy for his people. The messiah is born! The long dark night is over! The words of Zachariah are born out of thanksgiving for the good things God had done. We often forget the miracle of John the Baptist's conception which mirrors Abraham and Sarah's conception in the Old Testament. Zachariah and Elizabeth were "advanced in years" and much like Sarah, Elizabeth was barren. The angel of the Lord, Gabriel, appeared to Zachariah while he was in the Lord's sanctuary burning incense. This was the holiest place known to the Jews. Zachariah was struck mute because of his unbelief that God answered his prayer of many years to have a son. These words are the first words that Zachariah utters once the Lord opens his mouth - they are words of great thanksgiving and recognition of God's saving power for his people. In the end we needed Jesus infinitely more than God needed us. Jesus is the dawn on the long dark night of our sin and separation from God. Much like a watchman who stands guard through the night let us rejoice at the first light of the dawn - Jesus' birth. Merry Christmas to all!
* Check out this music video with a timely Christmas perspective check...Where's the Line to See Jesus?

Faith Challenge: Let the dawn from on high break upon you this Christmas and like Zachariah let it start with words of thanksgiving for the good work God has accomplished in your life.

Sr. Francelle's Devotion: St. Francis of Assisi "We have Francis to thank for making Christmas come alive through the Nativity Scenes as we have them today. That God would allow Himself to come into the world as a tiny baby, was something that caused Francis so much awe and wonder....... it was why he made the first Christmas Crib Scene in Assisi."

Counter-Culture News: LSN, Vatican, AFA, Priests for Life, Live Action

Our Prayers: Prayer to end abortion, Alpha Center, Peters family (JP). View, add, update Prayers on our website. Let’s pray now.

Feast Day: Christmas at Greccio What better way to prepare for the arrival of the Christ Child than to take a brief journey to Greccio, the spot in central Italy where St. Francis of Assisi created the first Christmas crib in the year 1223. Francis, recalling a visit he had made years before to Bethlehem, resolved to create the manger he had seen there.

Faith Quote: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi

Matt 21:32 (ready for Christmas?)

Welcome God now with this LIFE Group Devotion (website, Facebook).
.
"Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him." Matt 21:32 (full readings)
.
Pat's Reflections: What does it take to change your mind? Thank God for ultrasound machines that give parents an opportunity to see Life and change their mind about having an abortion. Think of the times that God has given us opportunities to change our minds by providing a clear message through a fellow Christian...that was ignored because of stubborn deafness to His voice and self-righteous attitude towards others. Lord, when we realize that we are wrong, may we courageously change our mind and heart...and then reconcile ourselves closer to you. Amen.
* The LIFE Group Devotions began in Dec 2007 (about). In Rich's Dec 9th 2007 devotion, he wrote about a retreat speaker mentioning how we often ask "Are you ready for Christmas?"...intending tree/lights/gifts/cards...but not intending praying/confessing sins/serving the most needy. Are you ready for Christmas?
.
Faith Challenge: In preparation to see and hear our Lord on Christmas morning, let's embrace the healing Sacrament of Reconciliation this week. If we can wait in shopping lines and Santa lines, we can gladly wait in Jesus lines. As we wait in line for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, remember that you are waiting in line to hear Jesus speak through the priest. To encourage the LIFE Group, consider sharing any special Sacrament of Reconciliation experiences as a comment to this devotion on the website or Facebook.
.
Counter-Culture News: LSN, Vatican, AFA, Priests for Life, Live Action
.
Our Prayers: Prayer to end abortion, Alpha Center, Peters family (JP). View, add, update Prayers on our website. Let’s pray now.
.
Feast Day: Blessed Mary Frances Schervier
.
Faith Quotes:
* "Santa brought me presents...but Jesus brought me Life."
* "Let no one mislead you or prevent you from seeing what really matters. Turn to Jesus, listen to Him, and discover the true meaning and direction of your lives." ~ John Paul II
.
Through Christ Our Lord,
Pat

Matt 5:44-45 (Reach Out!)

Welcome God today with this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (archive). Prove yourselves doers of the Word, and not merely hearers. James 1:22

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father... Matt 5:44-45 (full readings)

Pat nuggets:
* Rather than drafting off the Bible verse selected by the Living Faith devotional, Rich and I will now select our own verse/theme from the daily Mass readings on Tues/Thurs. Regarding today's verse, the commandment to love all, even our enemies, is at the foundation of our Christian faith. Love is recognized by our service/sacrifice...Reach Out (prayer, forgiveness, encouragement, help, etc)! See Faith Challenge below.
* On National Public Radio last week, I heard a commercial for a company that does fetal care..."saving babies before birth." Sounds like an advertisement for the LIFE Group!
* The LIFE Runners are doing the Sioux Falls Half/Full Marathon (12 Sep). Our Team Mission is: God first, Defend the Unborn, Encouragement, Health. We are raising $ for the Sioux Falls Alpha Center crisis pregnancy bus. Our 2010 team includes: Deanna/Jason Peters, Erica/Rich Reich, Doug Young, Angi/Pat Castle, John Shannon, Rob Rysavy, Becky Gregory, Brenda/Aaron Ferrie, Steve Castle, Pam McGushin, Jolene Stillings. For sponsoring a runner, go to http://www.alphacenter.org/ and click the "donate" link...write "LIFE Runners" in the box that says "Add special instructions to the seller." Also, please let your sponsored runner know for their fundraising accounting and training inspiration. Thank you for helping us defend the Unborn!

Faith Challenge: Generously encourage others by forwarding devotions or using the Facebook "invite people" link.
* NEW: In response to Christ's command to love all, reach out in love to an enemy today (prayer, forgiveness, encouragement, help, etc). Start with enemies closest to you...family, neighbors, coworkers.

* Reality of abortion (images), #1 cause of death (23% of pregnancies). Expose this unjust peace, setting unborn/parents free.
* NEW: Unborn Baby Jesus Poster Campaign Launched by Christian Consortium, "The ads feature a composite of ultrasound pictures of a baby with the addition of a halo. The caption reads, “He’s on His way. Christmas starts with Christ.”"

Our Prayers: Those who pray together stay together, and close to God (footnotes). Prayer to end abortion, Peters family (JP).
* NEW: Pat Castle (Rich Reich's PhD defense at 8 AM CST), Maryellen Seibert (boss Darlene recovering from surgery)

Feast Day: St. Germaine Cousin (patron for victims of child abuse)

Faith Quote: "What makes us holy is not work, but the action of grace within us...and within the specific limits of the daily toil by which we respond to grace." John Paul II

In Christ,
Pat

Psalm 32:1 ("Be like...")

Let's welcome God this morning by reflecting on this short Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which is based on Living Faith. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

Happy is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. Psalm 32:1 (full readings)

Living Faith snippets: "...preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time...he paced nervously back and forth awaiting his turn. What a relief to see his beaming face when he reentered the body of the church. He shared with us later that, as he poured his heart out in Confession, he felt completely embraced by a loving God. That experience also made possible a breakthrough: Knowing himself so welcomed by God opened this man's heart to love and to forgive himself as well." by Sr. Chris Koellhoffer

Pat nuggets:
* Today's devotion picture is our daughter Paige (9) praying at St. Mary's church in Alton, IL on 10 Oct. Paige asked Fr. Chris if it would be ok to pray at the tabernacle. [I met Fr. Chris the weekend prior at the St. Louis airport when I was heading to the TC Marathon (for ProLife).] Paige's role model is Blessed Mother Teresa, ever since we watched a movie about her. Paige wrote me a note that said, "Be like Mother Teresa"...I have it posted in my home office (aka man cave). Let's encourage our children to consider all vocations and to listen for God's call.
* It is perplexing that the proposed federal healthcare bill would fund abortions...completely counter to healthcare's sacred Hippocratic Oath that promises to "keep them from harm and injustice." 'It is a great poverty that a child must die that you might live as you wish' (Blessed Mother Teresa).

Sr. Francelle's devotion: Family "One of the highlights was...when nephews took me down to the abortion clinic, where we prayed the rosary. They were busy, as 14 women went inside - we don't know whether they went through with the abortion or not, but we do know prayers are never wasted or unheard."

Faith Challenges:
* NEW members include Bob Ramsey, Leslee Unruh, Mariah Craycroft, Caroline Metzinger...welcome! Let's all invite one person each week (John 14:6) to join our LIFE Group (>245 of God's children).
* NEW: We received a request to send our Compassion International child a Christmas gift...which reminded me of the LIFE Group Christmas challenge from last year. To imitate the real St. Nicholas in giving gifts to the poor and children, consider rallying your extended family to pool the adult Christmas gift funds for a charity (homeless shelter, troubled teens, crisis pregnancy center, counter-culture news sources below, etc). This sacrifice also simplifies Christmas, allowing more time to experience the true meaning and joy of Christmas!

Counter-Culture News: LifeSiteNews, American Family Association, Priests for Life
* Let's never forget the horrific reality of abortion (images)...#1 cause of death in America. Let's courageously share ProLife Truth to create social tension for exposing abortion's unjust peace...rebuilding a Culture of Life (Matt 5:16) and setting the unborn free!

Our Prayers: Those who pray together stay together. Fasting ideas in footnote below.
* Prayer to end abortion, abused children, chastity, peace, our enemies, our troops, depression/despair, prisoners, ProLife politicians, illnesses/injuries, jobs, natural disasters, refugees, addictions, persecuted believers, Peters family (JP in hospital), Lynn Bishara (for son Alex), Joyce Trunk (friend w/brain cancer)
* NEW: Stephanie Spader (20 wk ultrasound "looks perfect"), Kathy Castle (for the repose of the Soul of Vicki Miller...and for her husband Joe and 3 teenage children)

Feast Day: St. Gerard Majella (patron of expectant mothers)

Faith Quotes:
* Kathy Castle shared: "A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation." Psalm 68:5
* Aaron Ferrie shared: "God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:12

Through Christ our Lord,
Pat
Phil 4:13

* Prayer: Prayer connects us with God's will & His miracles, changing us & helping others. 'If you pray that God will move a mountain and He doesn't, assume Christ wants you to climb it instead.'
* Fasting: Let's fast from things that take our eyes off Jesus (selfishness, bitterness, being so critical, impatience, gossip, excessive video games, etc) and take on things that fix our eyes on Jesus (selflessness, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, patience, understanding, caring, helping, listening).
* Defend the unborn: 'Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death; don't stand back and let them die' (Prov 24:11). 'Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you' (Jer 1:5). 'It is a great poverty that a child must die that you might live as you wish' (Blessed Mother Teresa).
* Evangelization: Let's make room for unbelievers (be a friend, make a friend, lead a friend to Christ) and perpetual re-evangelization of self and those near us, by way of daily prayer (relationship) and following Christ's example of selfless love, mercy, and service (Matt 28:19).

Luke 2:34 (strip away worldly shell)

Welcome God every morning before your work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com). All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

This child is destined for the fall and rise of many... Luke 2:34

Living Faith snippets: “The liturgical readings today try to nudge us away from the nostalgic memories to the start reality that Christ's birth creates division between those who accept and those who reject him, those who love and those who hate. Allow some extra time in the Christmas spirit, letting it strip away the shell we grow to protect our hearts and souls in an insecure, troubled world. Christmas is about a child, and children invite us to honesty, vulnerability and love. Spend a few quiet moments in prayer [each day]. In your daily interactions, choose love, choose vulnerability, choose discipleship. Christmas is meant to last all year." by Sr. Kathryn J. Hermes (author of Journal for Surviving Depression and Making Peace with Yourself)

ProLife news: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ & http://www.priestsforlife.org/.
* Let's pray for courage to communicate the ProLife message through Christ to those around us (John 14:6)...rebuilding a Culture of Life (Matt 5:16).

Our Prayers: Prayer to End Abortion, chastity, our enemies, our troops, natural disasters, depression/ despair, prisoners, ProLife politicians, loss of loved ones, lack of faith, illnesses/injuries, Kathy Ayers brain surgery, Mike Castle (eye infection), Jason Peters (son JP), Carolyn McKissack (granddaughter Bailee with Crohn's), Joe Levisky (health issue), Rob Ouellette (St. Pat's prayer list), Rich Reich (Granny's health issues), Liz Curry (Bill, Julie), Dan Castle (for alcoholics Josh/Rachael)

Faith Quote: Sharon Carlson shared this one. "You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever." Psalm 16:11

* Fasting: Let's fast from things that takes our eyes off Jesus (selfishness, bitterness, being so critical, impatience, judgment, gossip, excessive video games, etc) and take on things that fix our eyes on Jesus (selflessness, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, patience, understanding, caring, helping, listening).
* Defend the unborn: 'Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death; don’t stand back and let them die' (Prov 24:11). 'Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you' (Jer 1:5). 'It is a great poverty that a child must die that you might lie as you wish' Blessed Mother Teresa.

1 Samuel 1:28 (Merry Christmas!)

Col. 3:17

Now I, in turn, give him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the Lord. 1 Samuel 1:28

Living Faith snippets: "Wonderful and mysterious things happen when we are willing to hold lightly what God has given to us. Although Hannah has longed for a child, she did not cling to Samuel, but consecrates the child she has so ardently prayed for to the Lord. Each of us has something that we long for with all our hearts. While our desires are not bad in themselves, we can become obsessed and lose our freedom if we make this desire the center of our universe." by Terri Mifek
* Let's pray that our desires are in check with the first commandment (God is #1), embracing God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as the center of our universe!

Christmas:
* My Mom (Kathy Castle) shared this powerful 5 min video, click O Holy Night. This short video has clips from The Nativity Story, showing the true meaning of Christmas. Our Savior Jesus Christ is born!

Psalm 25:9 (God sightings)

Welcome God every morning before your work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com). All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

He guides the humble to justice, He teaches the humble His way. Psalm 25:9

Living Faith snippets: "I'm reluctant to say, or even think, that God speaks to me. But there have been times when a voice that does not sound like my own does speak. Dear Lord, teach me your ways." by Aileen O'Donoghue (physics teacher at St. Lawrence University, author of "The Sky Is Not a Ceiling: An Astronomer's Faith")

God sightings: Today's snippets (above and below) inspired me to start this new thread for us to share our "God sightings" and share ways for us to encounter God acting in our lives.

Pastor Don's devotion: Read his devotion titled "Advent miracles" at http://pastordonbird.blogspot.com/. A few snippets: "I am reminded this week of the greatness of our God and the miraculous way He enters into our lives. My prayer is that through this Advent season, each of us is able to experience a miracle. For some it may be one of incredible magnitude that changes our lives drastically. For others it may be in a simple encounter that alters our perspective and catches a glimpse of the holy in our lives. And still for others it may be in the ordinary routine of life as we look deeper into the hearts of those we surround ourselves with everyday. This is a season of miracles - not just on 34th Street...but in the paved roads and dirt roads of our lives. May the Miracle of the World reveal Himself to you this Christmas season!"

Jesus' Christmas list: This is how we give Jesus a Christmas (birthday) gift..."whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matt 25:40). The true meaning of Christmas is to share our gifts (time, talent, treasure, faith, hope, love) with those lacking in "daily bread" and love. Who is in dire need of our Christmas gifts?
* (NEW) Scott Casmer shared: "There is a subdivision of the [C. Springs] Catholic Charities called "Life Connections" that does all the things this group is about [click here]. Making donations is nearly painless. On the following link, they show how $1000 donation ends up costing the donator only $187. I plan to donate this week. Others may want to consider it. [click here]."
* (NEW) My family received this wonderful Christmas gift from Rich & Erica Reich. "In your honor, a gift has been made to Heifer International to help struggling people around the world become self-reliant for food and income. May this gift bring you joy as it brings hope to families in need (a sheep, three rabbits, a flock of chicks, and a hive of honeybees)."

* Let's pray for courage to communicate the ProLife message through Christ to those around us (John 14:6)...rebuilding a Culture of Life (Matt 5:16).

Our Prayers: Prayer to End Abortion, chastity, our enemies, our troops, natural disasters, depression/ despair, prisoners, ProLife politicians, loss of loved ones, lack of faith, illnesses/injuries, John Peak (parent's health & his deployment), Rich Reich (Grandma with health problems), Pat Castle (Kathy Ayers recovering from brain surgery, Mike Castle eye infection), Liz Curry (friend Bill recovering from heart surgery)
* NEW: Jason Peters (health of son JP, http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jppeters), Carolyn McKissack (granddaughter Bailee with Crohn's), Rob Ouellette (Sally, Jim, Kevin, Joe, Carla & two Mary's)

Faith quote: Angi Castle shared this quote. "We should not live in the clouds, on a superficial level. We should dedicate ourselves to understanding our brothers and sisters." Mother Theresa

* Evangelization: Let's make room for unbelievers (be a friend, make a friend, lead friend to Christ) and perpetual re-evangelization of self and those near us, by way of daily prayer (relationship) and following Christ's example of selfless love, mercy, and service.
Let's joyfully live out the Good News and gladly tell others about it (Mark 16:15)!

Luke 1:38 (yes, God!)

Col. 3:17

Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Luke 1:38

Living Faith snippets: "Moved by God's grace, Mary chose to respond with loving faith to the plan God had laid out for her, a plan she did not fully understand. God promises to be with us when the events of our lives carry us beyond our ability to understand them. Our trust in God will ultimately bring us peace of mind and heart. God will certainly give this gift to all who pray for it, for without faith, our lives can have no meaning or joy." by Fr. Kenneth Grabner

Sister Francelle's devotion: Read her devotion titled "Whatever you think is what you become...‏" at http://sisterfrancelle.blogspot.com/. A few snippets: "I watched the Hallmark special, "Front of the Class." As a young boy, Brad Cohen became afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome, a neurological condition which causes one to twitch, utter odd noises and at times makes one feel out of control. In 1997, Brad was chosen "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" in the entire state of Georgia. When asked why he thought he received this honor, he said it was because of Tourette's Syndrome. Without this challenge, he felt he would not have succeeded. I wonder if each of us has a "Tourette" in our lives, some difficulty to overcome? God loves us just the way He made us! Keep on having a faith-filled Advent and you will have a beautiful Christmas!"

Pat nuggets:
* Sr. Francelle said "keep on having a faith-filled Advent." Not having a faith-filled Advent is like going to a buffet meal and not getting full. We have so many opportunities to experience our faith during this Christ focused time. At the Thurs morning Chemists for Christ Bible (CFC) Study, Joel Cain pointed out that the networks still play the Charlie Brown Christmas special where Linus tells Charlie Brown the true meaning of Christmas (Luke 2:8-14, see 1 min video).

* Today's verse is my favorite Christmas scripture because by definition everything good flows from our obedient, faith-filled "yes" to God (first commandment). Sr. Francelle said, "I wonder if each of us has a "Tourette" in our lives, some difficulty to overcome?" The answer to this question is "yes"...and our "yes" to God is the source of everything we need to overcome the "Tourette" (challenges) in our lives. By saying "yes" to God's love, my brother Dan is a recovered alcoholic who celebrated his 1 yr sobriety birthday on 1 Dec. Dan is now using his "Tourette" (alcoholism) to help other alcoholics find sobriety. By saying "yes" to God's love, my Uncle Mike is a recovered Vietnam Vet and now uses his "Tourette" (war trauma) to help other war veterans find peace. In a recent email, my brother Steve had this to say to my Uncle Mike. "You have been an example of God’s love to me. Your caring heart for others is second to none. Thank you for taking on the pain and suffering to become that man you are today. Frankly, I’m a better person for knowing you as a broken and shattered marine – a “bloody brother”. Thank God for the first “bloody brother” – Jesus." [See faith quote section below.]

Matthew 11:28 (find rest with Christ)

Welcome God every morning before your work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com). All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Living Faith snippets: "Jesus offers rest from our grueling burdens and arduous efforts. What surprises me is how easily I forget this generous invitation when I am overwhelmed with work or with troubles that inevitably arise. Instead of leaning on the heart of Christ, I give in to anxiety and worry. I work even harder and spend later hours in the office. I squirm and struggle, trying to get things to develop my way. Instead of turning to prayer and giving more attention to my divine resource, I lessen the time, believing it will help me "get more done." What a crazy response to Christ's wonderful invitation. I can receive an easing of what consumes me...if I deliberately slow down, become still, and turn my heart toward the One who urges, "Come to me." by Sr. Joyce Rupp

Pat nuggets:
* Today's devotion snippets (above) offer us great spiritual perspective and a rejuvenating resource to help us stay filled with peace and joy during this special (and busy) Advent time!

* I heard on NPR this morning that sadly 830,000 children die throughout the world from auto accidents. Rightfully, advocates discussed practical ways on how many of these lives could be saved with safety precautions. According to the Center for Bio-ethical Reform, ~42 million abortions occur every year throughout the world (115,000 per day) http://www.abortionno.org/Resources/fastfacts.html. As ProLife advocates, what can we do to help save some of these lives? Kerry Tragesser shared that Planned Parenthood of Indiana advertised Christmas gift certificates that could be used for abortions (http://www.ppin.org/news.aspx?NewsID=84). To help counter this Culture of Death influence, we could donate to a Culture of Life influence in the name of a friend or family member (as a Christmas gift). For example, we could contribute to the "$5 donation drive campaign" for LifeSiteNews or to Priests for Life.

Jesus' Christmas List: This is how we give Jesus a Christmas (birthday) gift..."whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matt 25:40). Faith Quote: "All sectors of life can be illuminated with the light of the faith. I am thinking, among other areas, of the world of culture, science and politics; of the promotion of the family founded on marriage between a man and a woman; of the creation of more just working conditions and the assistance of the disadvantaged; of concern for the environment; of defence of human life at every stage of existence, and of the right and obligation of parents to the spiritual and moral education of their children." Pope Benedict XVI

Luke 1:28 (obstacles, greed, God's love, silent no more, Mary)

Welcome God every morning before your work by taking ~5 min to read this Living In Faith Exchange (LIFE) Group devotion (life-devotions.blogspot.com), which has snippets from Living Faith (livingfaith.com). All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 3:17

Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. Luke 1:28

Living Faith snippets: "Mary's "yes" is not just about her and God. It's about all of us...the whole, winding, messy journey of humanity. She's giving herself over completely to God for His loving purposes. Only God can clear out the obstacles [see Faith quote below], which He did for Mary from her conception [see Holy Day below]. And which He does within us, too, beginning with the waters of baptism and continuing with each "yes" we offer Him. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you...[pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death]." by Amy Welborn

Pastor Don's devotion: Read his devotion that I titled "Combating Greed" at http://pastordonbird.blogspot.com/. A few snippets: "I hope and pray that this email finds all of you in a place where your hearts are open to receiving Christ today. That is what this Advent season is all about - preparing our hearts for Christ to live and reign in us! As Christians we often times rail against the commercialization of Christmas. We can easily identify the greed in others, but are we ready to identify the greed in our own lives? How much do we spend this time of year on things that, come next Christmas, we don't even use anymore? The dictionary defines greed as "an excessive desire for getting or having". Greed goes beyond the material. Are we greedy with our time? Wanting to use it on the things we enjoy and not offering that time in service to others or God? Are we greedy with our attitudes, believing that our wants are above the needs of others, always expecting something in return? We are reminded this time of the year of a selfless, sacrificial God who comes to us in the form of an innocent, tiny baby. The only thing He is greedy for is His excessive desire for the hearts of each of His children. Let's allow God to search our hearts and prepare us for the coming of our King. Before we look at the greedy world and condemn it, let's look at our own greediness and ask God to heal it. Romans 12:1-2. This Advent season, let God bring the best out of each of us and if we are going to be greedy for anything this season, let's be greedy for Christ and have an excessive desire to do His will."

Jesus' Christmas (birthday) List: This is how we give Jesus a Christmas (birthday) gift..."whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matt 25:40). Matthew 15:30 (Volition)

Col. 3:17

They placed them at His feet, and He cured them. Matthew 15:30

Living Faith snippets: "Use this poignant image for your prayers today. You may wish to lay before the feet of Jesus your excessive need to control or perhaps some form of resentment...an unhealthy busyness that threatens your spiritual and physical well-being or maybe an addictive behavior from which you would like to be free. Place before the feet of Jesus all that prevents you from being the person God created you to be." by Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr

Pat nuggets: In visiting with the homebound in nursing homes, I discovered that most of the elderly residents do not have regular visitors. Consider visiting a nearby nursing home for just one hour during Advent. This is a powerful example of love (service/sacrifice) for children, and everyone is richly blessed by the experience.
* The Colorado Springs LIFE Devotions Group members (LIFEr's) are invited to meet at the Liberty Heights nursing home (near New Life church) from 6:30-7:30 PM, Thurs, 11 Dec (for caroling and visiting with the residents). Please let me know if you plan to attend.
Jesus' Christmas (birthday) List: This is how we give Jesus a birthday present..."whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matt 25:40). The true meaning of Christmas is to share our gifts (time, talent, treasure) with those lacking in "daily bread" and love. Who is in needs of our Christmas gifts?
* NEW: Life Network (http://www.elifenetwork.com/)
* NEW: Chad Livingston shared..."The street church is in need of back packs to hand out to the homeless; the bigger the better."

Christian ID: How would unbelievers recognize a Christian in the world? By our love! Let's share things we can do to glorify God and love neighbor.
* NEW: Chad Livingston shared, "Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful." Col 3:12-15

ProLife news: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ & http://www.priestsforlife.org/
* NEW: Angi Castle shared this video about how some autistic people communicate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jc. There is a strong ProLife message that begins at ~3 min into the 8 min video. Special needs people are God's children who deserve to live and be loved! In many ways, we all have special needs and handicaps...
* NEW: Jean Noon shared this about Jesus..."But of His own volition He died because of love to do God’s will." Volition is defined as a conscious choice or decision. Check out the powerful 15 min ProLife movie "Volition" and article at http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/nov/08112501.html. An article snippet: "Volition places its central character in the historical contexts of...the greatest human rights violations in history: the holocaust, slavery, and abortion."

Our Prayers: Prayer to End Abortion, chastity, our enemies, our troops, natural disasters, depression/ despair, prisoners, ProLife politicians, loss of loved ones, lack of faith, illnesses/injuries, Joe Castle (medical concerns), Matt Kayser (family of Jesse Alne), Rob Ouellette (Jeff, Arleen, Ramona, Pat)

* Let's pray for courage to communicate the ProLife message (through Christ) to those around us (John 14:6)...rebuilding a Culture of Life (Matt 5:16).

Faith quote: "We are called not to be successful in the conversion of others or of society- for that is in God's hands [1 Cor 3:6-9]. Rather, we are called to be faithful. God is at work in the world because He seeks every human heart. Knowing this makes even great trials and disappointments worth bearing." by Daniel Avila (Columbia magazine)
