Mark 10:45 (The Root of Change) by Karla Brien

Welcome God with this LIFE Group Devotion (website, Facebook).

“For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (full readings)

Karla's Reflections: Strange. Ironic. Counter-cultural. The message Jesus gave to James and John was revolutionary—in order to be great, one must become a servant. Focused on Jesus’ kingship and the potential benefits associated with that power, these disciples had missed the living testimony of God’s Son. Greatness is not found in prestige or position. Rather, greatness is found in offering a cup of cold water…being an available servant to those around us. Jesus came to seek and save the lost, not to set up an earthly kingdom. As Christ’s ambassadors, we are to follow his example by bridging the gap for those who don’t know the truth—reminding people that a citizenship in heaven is available. In a broken and hurting world, we can serve with loving kindness by gently leading those suffering to our Rapha God (the Lord who heals). While serving in many facets to make known and end this stench of abortion—being messengers for change, we must never forget the root of change, salvation. As the Holy Spirit takes up residence in a person’s life, the way we think and respond in and to the world changes. On earth, Jesus made clear his aim of service and leaves us an example to follow. When the lost get saved, hearts not only change, but people and cultures change.
